About East Tennessee State University

East Tennessee State University, or ETSU for short, is an accredited American university located in Johnson City, which is a city in the US state of Tennessee, most of it being located in Washington County, also stretching into Carter and Sullivan counties, with a population estimated at a number of more than 60 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census, fact which makes it the 8th largest city in the state. Johnson City is the principal city of the Johnson City Metropolitan Statistical Area, and it is currently ranked 44th among "Best Small Place for Business and Careers" in the USA by Forbes and no. 8 "Best Place for African-Americans to Retire" in the USA by Black Enterprise Magazine.

 

ETSU was established in 1911, being founded as East Tennessee State Normal School, which had the mission to educate teachers. East Tennessee State officially became a college in 1925 when it changed its name to East Tennessee State Teachers College, and it became a university in 1963, adopting the name it holds today.

 

East Tennessee State University has been named by The Princeton Review as one of America's Best Value Colleges, hosting educational programs that benefit both the region and nation, including the Quillen College of Medicine, consistently ranked as one of the top schools nationwide for rural medicine and primary care education, including the College of Nursing, the Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy, and the recently formed College of Clinical and Rehabilitative Health Sciences, also offering unique educational programs, nationally acclaimed and accredited, such as the ones in Bluegrass, Old Time, and Country Music, the nation's lone master's degree in Storytelling, and the Appalachian Studies programs, focused on the surrounding Appalachian region.

 

Athletics

ETSU's athletic teams are known as the Buccaneers, who compete in the NCAA Division I Atlantic Sun Conference, in various men's and women's sports, including in basketball, baseball, tennis, golf, soccer, volleyball, softball and track & field. The Buccaneers are, perhaps, best known for their basketball teams, which has contributed to the university's athletic fame with numerous notable achievements, the men's basketball team winning win the 2004 Southern Conference championship, 2007 Atlantic Sun title, the 2009 Atlantic Sun Tournament championship, and the 2010 Atlantic Sun Tournament championship, while the women's basketball team made three consecutive appearances in the NCAA Women's Division I Basketball Championship (2008 to 2010) and has averaged 20.3 wins over the 2006-2009 seasons.
